Welcome to City Stories site
City Stories is the international comics project created in
the city of Lodz, home of the International Festival of Comics. This
document has two main goals: Promotion of the project and its rules.
Detailed description of the project for potential partners interested in participation. The project’s rules are flexible and can be subject to changes that are suitable for the country or city that expresses their interest in it. It should be stressed that the project creates a very interesting promotional opportunities for the city it takes place in. City Stories – General Outline:The international comics project ‘City Stories’ was launched in 2006. It is an innovative action that has no precedence in the comics world.
The basic rule of the project is to create comics stories that take place in the city of Lodz or are somehow connected to it. For every edition we invite comics artists from Poland and the same number of cartoonists from another country, where the project currently takes place
(in 2006 it was Russia, in 2007 – the UK). The artists work in international duos (e.g. Polish script writer and Russian drawer) and together they create a comics story, whose action must be placed in the city of the project. The works are later published in a bilingual album and presented in exhibitions. The second phase of the project is to create a similar album about a city where the international artists came from. So this time the Polish artists turn into international guests and get to know the partners’ city. Therefore, one edition of the project must be finished by publishing two bilingual albums – one about Lodz and one about the other city.
The City Stories project is very beneficial. Most of all, it is an effective
and original way to promote your city. It always attracts both national
and international media, there are international artists visiting the
city and finally, the created albums are distributed abroad. The city
gains a reputation for being an innovative cultural center where original
and new ideas can be developed. The City Stories is also a way of promoting
comics art and comics artists. The idea for the City Stories project came
from Adam Radon – director of the International Festival of Comics in
Lodz. The project is one of the most important events during each festival
and has attracted new public that had not shown interest in the comics
art before. Organization of City Stories – the Project’s Milestones:
Finding the partner city for the project.
Choosing the artists from both places.
Organizing the meeting of the artists in the theme city – travel and accommodation costs, guided tour of the city.
Working together in international duos, first concepts and ideas, getting to know the city.
Back home: Working on the stories and completing them.
Translating the comics (partners’ language and Polish language)
Designing the exhibition and the bilingual album.
Printing and production of the exhibition and the album.
Paying the remuneration to the artists.
Distributing the album. The whole cycle lasts for about five months (stories about one city).
